Also includes 5 file cards on early Guelph: reports on the concert by Robert Merrill, Guelph, Mar. 21, 1956, given by the Presto Club; reflections on E. Johnson's early life in Guelph; 1898 concert for the benefit of the Speed Canoe Club (owned by E. Johnson's uncle, William); genealogical information on E. Johnson's grandparents and other relatives (descendents of Coningsby and Martha Evans); Guelph Weekly Mercury article, Apr. 10, 1890, concerning the teaching of music by Mr. C. Crowe in the Central School; newspaper obituaries for Arthur Higinbotham (Sept. 16, 1955) and Flora MacLean Browett, who taught E. Johnson in primary grades at private school.

James P. Johnson was born in Yankton, South Dakota, on June 2, 1930. He grew up in Muleshoe and Lubbock, Texas. He left Texas to attend Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, graduating in 1952. That same year he went into the Marine Corps.
